Microgrid Design

As part of NJIT Center for Building Knowledge, I was asked to make a graphic for a presentation that could explain the importance of Microgrids. My boss explained that he didn’t want the graphic to be wordy and confusing like so many graphics he had seen. I had to research Microgrids to further understand them so I could make a successful graphic in a short time frame.

I started with this vertical design. I had to turn it to horizontal per my boss’ request.

While I felt my idea would work better as an animation, I did my best to convey my meaning with a singular image.

After I submitted my final design, my boss asked if I could make two versions. One as a “Blue Sky” when the grid is working and a “Black Sky” when there was an outage and the city had to pull from a microgrid to run properly.

Blue Sky
Black Sky

When presenting the idea, my boss said that he could tell people understood the concept better with the aid of my graphics.

I used Illustrator and Photoshop.
