NOPE Movie Poster

After the trailer for Jordan Peele’s new movie, NOPE, was released, I knew I had to make a fan art poster for it. There wasn’t too much to go off of, but I tried highlighting all of the visible characters and the overall extraterrestrial theme.

With my early sketch, I knew I wanted the characters and objects to make up the alien head shape we see in the trailer. I also loved the shot of Daniel Kaluuya’s character looking into the distance and seeing the car lights, so I took that visual and made them the eyes and nostrils of the alien. Another not so hidden detail is the man riding on the horse at the bottom. As the movie trailer states in the opening, the “first assembly of photographs to create a motion picture was a two second clip of a black man on a horse.” Since the man portrayed in that footage is an ancestor of Keke Palmer’s character, and the inspiration for the “Haywood Ranch” company she runs, I wanted to include that in the poster with a twist. I took a still frame from that two second footage and redrew Daniel Kaluuya’s character on horseback, which is another callback to the trailer.

Initially, I planned on making a poster with a lighter background, but after rewatching numerous times, and reviewing the official poster, I opted for a darker, night sky backdrop.

I’m truly excited for this film!
